I love a good old wives’ tale. Some of them are suspiciously accurate, and I don’t care what anyone says! My husband and I wanted to know the gender of our baby, but we waited until the 20-week scan to find out. Until then, I was DYING to know. So, naturally, I went down the rabbit hole of every single gender prediction myth out there. And now that we know we’re having a boy (spoiler alert!), I thought it would be fun to go through which of these myths held up and which were total nonsense.
Morning Sickness
Myth: Girls = lots of nausea | Boys = little to no nausea
Reality: Not true for me! The first trimester was rough. I never actually got sick, but I constantly felt like I was this close. I also have pregnant friends who were the same, so this one didn’t check out for me. That said, I’ve heard from plenty of moms that having a girl means throwing up constantly. So maybe it’s more of a severity thing?
Cravings
Myth: Girls = sweet | Boys = salty
Reality: Ehh, kinda? I didn’t have crazy cravings, just random ones that changed daily. Some days I wanted ice cream, other days it was all about chips. Based on what other moms have told me, maybe the real sign is if you have consistent cravings throughout pregnancy, then it’s a girl. But who knows?
Heartburn
Myth: Girls = bad heartburn | Boys = little to none
Reality: True for me! I’ve always had bad heartburn and was fully expecting it to get worse, but (knock on wood) it hasn’t changed at all. So this one held up!
Bump Position
Myth: Girls = high | Boys = low
Reality: VERY TRUE. This baby is sitting lowwww.
Complexion
Myth: Girls = breakouts | Boys = clear skin
Reality: Hard to say. I’ve always had hormonal acne, but since getting pregnant (and stopping my usual acne products), my skin hasn’t gotten worse. So I guess it checks out!
Baby’s Heartbeat
Myth: Girls = 140+ bpm | Boys = <140 bpm
Reality: Not true for me! My baby boy was clocking in at around 160 bpm. I actually thought he was a girl for a while because so many moms swore by this one. Reddit, you lied to me.
Emotions
Myth: Girls = moody | Boys = chill
Reality: Surprisingly true! My emotions have been heightened for sure, but I wouldn’t call myself moody. Even my husband said he hasn’t noticed a difference, which I’m still deciding if that’s a good thing or if I’ve always just been this chaotic.
Skin Texture
Myth: Girls = soft skin | Boys = dry skin
Reality: SO TRUE. My hands look like they belong to a White Walker. I’ve never had dry skin in my life, and now I’m basically bathing in lotion. Self-tanning before my baby shower? A real gamble at this point.
Weight Gain
Myth: Girls = weight all over | Boys = just the belly
Reality: Not true for me! I gained more in my arms, legs, and face before my belly even popped. So either this one’s a myth, or I’m just built different.
Final Verdict
Some of these old wives’ tales were surprisingly spot on, while others were way off. But hey, it was fun obsessing over them while I waited for the big ultrasound. If you’re pregnant and impatient like I was, take these with a grain of salt (or a spoonful of ice cream, no judgment).
What gender myths held true for you? Drop them in the comments—I need to know if I was just scammed by the internet or if there’s actually some truth to these!
